CME: Prevention and Treatment of Stress-Related Disorders Through the Transcendental Meditation Technique


Program Description / Statement of Need:

Stress has been linked to all the leading causes of death, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, accidents, and suicide.


Almost 90 percent of all visits to primary healthcare providers are due to stress-related problems.

  It is estimated that 1 million Americans miss work due to stress-related complaints.


Transcendenal Mediitation (TM) has been shown to prevent and treat stress related disorders.

How Transcendental Meditation (TM) affects patients with anxiety, hypertension, heart disease, substance abuse, PTSD, and other stress-related disorders.



Target Audience:

This program has been designed for a multidisciplinary physician, PA, NP and nurse audience.

Program Objectives:

By the end of the session the participant will be able to:

    • Describe and discuss the impact of stress on physical and mental health.
    • Describe and discuss physiological and biochemical changes occurring during the Transcendental Meditation technique that indicate deep relaxation.
    • Explain the neurophysiological (EEG) findings during the TM technique and how those findings correlate with mental functions that are adaptive to stress.
    • Describe and discuss published research on the effects of TM practice on anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.
    • Describe and discuss published research findings on reduction of high blood pressure and improvement in cardiovascular outcomes through TM practice.


    This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through ScientiaCME. ScientiaCME is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.


    Credit Designation: ScientiaCME designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
