CME: Are We Applying Goal Directed Therapy Concepts During High-Risk Surgery?

ACCREDITATION EXPIRED: January 14, 2014

Activity Description / Statement of Need:

In this online CME self-learning program:

The use of a pre-emptive strategy of hemodynamic monitoring and coupled therapy reduces surgical mortality and morbidity. Dr. Cannesson discusses current practices and makes suggestions for practice improvements. He suggests that relying on basic hemodynamic monitoring is not enough to get the full hemodynamic picture, that using mini Invasive and cardiac output monitors while applying Goal Directed Therapy (GDT) protocol have potential to improve patients’ outcome. Dr. Cannesson concludes that decision support system and closed loop systems need to be implemented in clinical practice.

Agenda:

  • - The importance of goal-directed therapy: a statistical and literature-based demonstration of need and variations in practice
  • - Roles of hemodynamic monitoring techniques durring high-risk surgery
  •     -  Invasive arterial pressure
  •     -  Central venous pressure
  •     -  Dynamic parameters … and their limitations
  •     -  Cardiac output
  • - Summary of the evidence

Target Audience:

This program has been designed for a multidisciplinary physician and nurse audience including: Emergency Medicine / ICU / Anesthesia / Peri-op / Intensivists / Trauma / Critical Care

Supported through an educational grant from Edwards Lifesciences

Release Date: January 14, 2012 -- Expiration Date: January 14, 2014

Faculty: Maxime Cannesson, MD

Agenda

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session the participant will be able to:

  • Give an example of how the use of a pre-emptive strategy of hemodynamic monitoring and coupled therapy reduces surgical mortality and morbidity.
  • Describe mini-invasive and cardiac output monitors that are available today.
  • Describe how decision support systems and closed loop systems will effect clinical practice
  • Describe differences between ASA and ESA members in terms of GDT and other protocols.
