Activity Description / Statement of Need:
In this online CME self-learning program:
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a major public health burden. Based on the National Comorbidity Survey data using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, the estimated risk of MDD over any given 12-month period is 6.6% (13.1 – 14.2 million U.S. adults), with an estimated lifetime risk of 16.2% (32.6 – 35.1 millions US adults). Another estimate, from a recent wave of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, indicates that 17.53% of men and 25.52% of women across all ages report having experienced depressive symptoms in the past. Unfortunately, 58.8% of adults with symptoms classified as moderate and 36.9% of adults with symptoms classified as severe neither saw mental health professional nor received pharmacological treatment, suggesting a gap between present and optimal treatment of MDD.
MDD is treatable and optimally involves a blend of appropriate medical resources, high-quality depression treatment programs and regimens, a collaboration of all persons responsible for the well-being of the patient, and educational programs supportive of those aspects of care. This program has been designed to bring healthcare professionals’ knowledge up to date with the currently best and recommended practices in treating MDD.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the session the participant will be able to:
- Describe the challenges associated with diagnosis of MDD.
- Describe the challenges associated with treating patients with MDD.
- Apply existing diagnostic recommendations and criteria to practice in the management of MDD.
- Identify the present treatment options currently available for management of MDD and apply them to patient cases using evidence-based medicine
- Evaluate a treatment plan for a specific patient based on degree of MDD to optimize safety and efficacy, suggesting modifications for improvement.
