CME: Successful Strategies for Addressing Patient Safety Hot Topics - Infusion Devices

ACCREDITATION EXPIRED: September 10, 2015

Activity Description / Statement of Need:

In this online CME self-learning program:

The overall learning activity will focus on infusion devices, informatics, and continuous quality improvement and the role of the physicians and allied health professions play in it.

  • Infusion devices, informatics, and continuous quality improvement: The Institute of Medicine’s report, Preventing Medication Errors, emphasizes the importance of healthcare organizations adopting best practices in safe medication use and prioritizing proven strategies to minimize harm from medications. The report highlights the widespread adoption of technology, one example of which has been the increased use of medication infusion pumps with dose error reduction software, also called “smart pumps”.  Smart pumps not only include dose error reduction software, which provides administration guidelines using establishing standard concentrations, dose limits, infusion time limits, and clinical advisories, but they also record data that is useful for healthcare organizations to improve the quality of medication administration. Data collected allows for users to evaluate the use of the pump within the institution and identify opportunities to improve IV medication administration.
